Joram Nyathi is a journalist and former Editor of The Herald daily publication. He was appointed to the position in December 2018. He was however suspended in January 2019, a week after violent protests and a heavy-handed crackdown by the police rocked the country. Before joining Zimpapers, Nyathi spent more than 13 years at Alpha Media Holdings publications.

As Editor of the Herald

In December 2018 Nyathi was promoted from Deputy Editor to Editor the Herald after Caesar Zvayi's removal from the post.

On the afternoon of 22 January, after Mnangagwa's return to Zimbabwe the previous night in order to deal with the January 2019 Protests crisis, Zanu-PF member, Mayor Justice Wadyajena said the Herald editor should have made the return a front news item:

His Excellency, President @edmnangagwa’s return only makes Page 2? Something cooking over at @HeraldZimbabwe. It’ll all end with a lot of egg on some faces! What’s going on Cdes @nickmangwana @energymutodi and where are you Editor at Large @caesarzvayi?[1]

Later that day, Nyathi was suspended indefinitely from his position as Editor of The Herald. Following the suspension, Nyathi posted on Twitter, "Let me go cool home. I tried".[2]

Deputy Editor at The Herald

In November 2017, following the ouster of President Robert Mugabe by a coup, Nyathi said of his work as Deputy Editor at The Herald, “It makes you feel stupid writing this stuff. But you’re working for government media. You know what to expect.” [3]
