Mildred Chiri is Zimbabwe's Auditor General.

Education

Chiri holds a Bachelor of Accounting degree from the University of Zimbabwe. She is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries (FCIS) and a member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) as well as a member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants (CPA) . Mrs Chiri is a Registered Public Accountant (RPACC). She is currently pursuing an Master of Business of Administration programme.[1]

Career

Mildred Chiri was appointed as Controller and Auditor-General on February 24, 2004. Chiri joined the Office of the Controller and Auditor General as an Audit Assistant in 1983 and rose through the ranks to the position of Controller and Auditor General. Mrs Chiri managed to clear a backlog of the annual Comptroller and Auditor General’s reports which had lagged behind since the year 2000.

She is a Board member of Norway based INTOSAI Development Initiative, an organisation that capacitates supreme Audit Institutions (Auditor Generals’ Offices) throughout the world, through training among other methods. Chiri has been on this Board since 2012 and she is currently the only member on the board from developing countries. She is also a member of the Governing Board of AFROSAI (African Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions). She was once the vice president of AFROSAI-E (African Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions for English Speaking countries).She is also former chairperson of the sub-committee of Human Resources for AFROSAI-E. She is now a member of the sub-committee on Finance for AFROSAI-E. Mrs Chiri is the current patron of the Institute of Internal Auditors in Zimbabwe and she was involved in the crafting of the National Code on Corporate Governance which was launched in 2015. She chaired the theme on the ‘Role of Government and Governance’.

Chiri has won some awards for her work. She won the Chartered Secretary of the Year award for 2010 which was bestowed by the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA) in Zimbabwe for the role of the Auditor General’s Office in promoting transparency and accountability. In 2016, she also received an award from Women’s Institute of Leadership, called the Women’s Top Leadership Excellence Award for the Government Sector.

The title of the Controller and Auditor- General was changed to just Auditor General in 2013 because the comptroller function was discontinued.

Being fired by President Mugabe

Mildred Chiri was allegedly fired by President Mugabe in July 2017, as she was reported to have at least two years left on her contract. Mike Ndudzo was named as the Auditor-General. [2]
