News:Kirsty Coventry wins African Union Sports Council Award
Kirsty Coventry, was crowned the Sportswoman of the Year at the inaugural African Union Sports Council Region Five Regional Annual Sports awards held in Johannesburg, South Africa on Saturday night.
Coventry was nominated for the Sportsperson of the Year award as well but came tops in the Sportswoman of the Year ahead of South Africa’s cyclist Ashleigh Pasio Moolman and Mozambican athlete Edmilsa Governo.
Region Five is made up of 10 Southern Africa Region countries — Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
The seven-time Olympic-medallist was the only Zimbabwean athlete who came tops in her category as South Africa dominated the awards. South Africa won top awards in six of the 11 categories, including the Sportsperson of the Year award, which went to Wayde van Niekerk. Sports Journalist of the Year was won by Zimbabwean Farai Machamire.
Coventry will be representing Zimbabwe in the 100m and 200m backstroke events at the Olympic Games scheduled for August in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
