Bikita West legislator Munyaradzi Kereke has been sentenced to 14 years in jail. Kereke was facing rape and indecent assault charges. He was earlier this morning found guilty of raping his 11 year old niece at gunpoint. He was however acquitted of the indecent assault charges. Kereke will serve an effective 10 years after four were suspended on good behaviour.

This was a landmark trial, as it was the first private prosecuted case Zimbabwe has had, seeing that the Johannes Tomana-led Public Prosecution felt that there wasn't any strong evidence to get a conviction.

During the trial Kereke had claimed that Joice Mujuru, Simon Khaya Moyo, Gideon Gono and Webster Shamu had contributed to fabricate the rape charges against him to smear his political career and business image.
