Sunday "Mhofu" Chidzambwa is the former Warriors' coach and captain. Sunday is counted among the top footballers to ever emerge out of Zimbabwe. He has worked extensively in footballing circles including coaching Dynamos and made a historic qualification to the Africa Cup of Nations. He also coached in the South African Premier League. He was the first coach to take the Zimbabwe National Soccer Team to the AFCON finals held in Tunisia in 2004.

Background

Sunday Chidzambwa was born on May 4, 1952 in Chivhu and his brother Misheck Chidzambwa was also an eminent footballer as well as a coach locally.[1]

Football career

Sunday played for Dynamos Football Club locally under which he was nicknamed "Mhofu". His career at Dynamos was arguably the zenith of his footballing career as he captained Dynamos Football Club to five league titles.[2] He is also reckoned as one of the best defenders to have played for the National team and Dynamos. Chidzambwa was part of the national side that played a world cup qualifying match in 1989.[2]

Coaching career

Chidzambwa did not only make a name for himself by captaining Dynamos to five league titles but also coached the glamour boys to an impressive seven league titles making him the most decorated Dynamos coach in club history.[3] It has also been argued that the pinnacle of Chidzambwa's glittering coaching career was when he coached Dembare all the way to the final of the African Champions League in 1998 where they lost under very controversial circumstances. Chidzambwa's exploits in the Champions League are the more impressive considering that they are yet to be emulated, the closest someone ever came to reaching the finals of the African Champions League was when the David Mandigora coached Dynamos was knocked out in the semi finals by Cotton Sport of Cameroon.[3] Chidzambwa's coaching career at national level is also exceptional in that he coached the national team to their first ever Africa Cup of nations appearance in Tunisia as well as guiding the warriors to two of their four COSAFA titles.[3]. He also coached ZPC Kariba in the local Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League from 2015 to 2017. He is arguably the most successful coach in with the Warriors after guiding them to 3 COSAFA Cup titles and 2 AFCON appearances.

He has come open that he will be retiring from coaching but will take roles to do with advisory only and not coaching.[4]
