ConCourt dismisses Majome's case against ZBC's mandatory licences

The Constitutional Court dismissed MDC-T member Jessie Majome’s case against the constitutionality of the mandatory ZBC licence fees.  The case was dismissed with cost last Friday, with the apex court noting that Majome had erred in refusing to pay  ZBC’s viewership and listener’s licence and that there was already a law on the books which dealt with the conduct of ZBC.

Part of the judgement reads:

In this case, no infringement of a fundamental right was established because the applicant adopted a wrong remedy for the rights she alleges were infringed.

The conducted complained of in this case is the alleged biased selection of presentation of TV and radio programmes by the public broadcaster in favour of Zanu PF political party.

“There is law of general application prohibiting specifically such conduct by the broadcaster…the conduct complained of does not give a right to constitutional matter at all”.
