Government refuses to sign off on ZETDC proposal to sack 1 600 workers

The government has stopped the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) from sacking  1 600 workers.  The parastatal is overstaffed by over 5 000 workers, which has been straining the salary and wage bills.  However, the government refused to sign off on the propopsal

A governmentt official who spoke to the Financial Gazette said:

Government has rejected a proposal by ZETDC to undertake a redundancy exercise.

Instead, we said these (workers) should be re-deployed to other departments within ZETDC

However, ZETDC refuted the retrenchmet claims.  ZESA’s acting spokesperson, Shepherd Mandizvidza said:

The power utility has not laid off any of its employees as they still have a role to play in the organisation. ZETDC is a responsible corporate citizen and when there is need for the organisation to streamline its operations accordingly, relevant consultations are done with the shareholder and all stakeholders,
