Tafara senior citizens threaten Harare City with class action lawsuit unless they get regular water supply

63 Tafara residents, most of them senior citizens,  have signed a petition demanding  Harare City Council (HCC) to supply them with a regular supply of piped water.  Some of the residents have gone for more than 10-years without piped water.

The residents also want their water bills to be recalculated since they are being billed for non-existent services.   The petitioners have threatened to file a class action lawsuit at the High Court unless their concerns are addressed.  They are threatening to sue HCC and Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing.

Excerpts of the petition read:

Despite that knowledge, the City of Harare continues billing us on water that we never consumed.

We believe there is a contract between the council and its residents whereby council provides water and in turn we pay for the water consumed.

Social justice demands that we pay for what we consume. We give notice that if our prayer to have bills recalculated is not done, our intention is to proceed to court on a class action against yourselves and the ministry concerned.
