Bulawayo City Council turns down request for free graves by war vets

Bulawayo City Council (BCC) turned down a request from the Zimbabwe  National Liberation War Veterans (ZNLWVA) to be provided with free graves at the Provincial Heroes Acre. The BCC rejected the request which would have cost it $860 citing that the responsibility lay with the Ministry of Home Affairs through the Department of National Museums and Monuments.

Part of the Council report reads:

It would, therefore, be advisable for the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) to direct their request to the Department of National Museums and Monuments who would if need be, then approach Council for assistance as appropriate.

The war veterans had written to the council saying

The Ministry of Public Works has a duty of providing materials, digging of graves but is unable to provide this service citing lack of funding. Currently relatives of War Veterans Association are taking the toll duty of providing this service with no assistance from anywhere hence our resort to ask for assistance from your office.

If possible we can have 15 graves or more in the Heroes Acre for the time being
