Harare mayor defends decision to buy Bulawayo mayor $120 000 car

Bernard Manyenyeni, the Harare city mayor has come out in defence of the decision to purchase a car valued at $118 000 for his Bulawayo counterpart. The city of Bulawayo got its mayor Councillor Martin Moyo, a Mercedes-Benz GLE 250 to replace his Mazda BT50. This did not go down well with residents with some accusing the council and the mayor of unjustly enriching themselves in their last year of office, at the expense of service delivery.

However, Harare Mayor Bernard Manyenyeni defended the decision saying:

The City of Kings (Bulawayo) is our second largest city and is bigger than some government ministries which are headed by ministers and deputies with two cars which they walk away with – no excuse, but just to compare. The mayor heads the best-run municipality in the country – having enjoyed significant levels of independence from central government for many years

I know that black BT50 Mazda double-cab well. Mayoral jobs in Zimbabwe are impossible missions – largely because of the rough political terrain, the non-executive template, and poor resources (collection and management).
