Police launch blitz on illegal forex changers, admit some were tipped off about raid

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) launched a clampdown on illegal foreign currency changers in Bulawayo and promised to continue raiding the “cash barons.” However, the police conceded that a good number of the dealers were tipped off before the raids and managed to escape the dragnet. The number of cash dealers arrested is yet to be revealed. Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Precious Simango said:

We have launched a campaign targeting illegal money changers among other cash barons.

I cannot immediately confirm the number of people we have arrested so far. But the raids will continue as we try to arrest those hoarding cash.

We also appeal to members of the public to desist from buying cash on the street because they also expose themselves to criminals.

Since Saturday, there has been reports of people coming in cars from Harare to sell cash in Bulawayo. But before we even started the raids, they have disappeared
