City of Harare To Bring Water From Kariba Via Pipeline, Says It's Cheaper Than Building A Dam

The Harare City Council is considering a proposal to build a pipeline from Lake Kariba that will be used to supply water for the city’s inhabitants. According to the deputy mayor, Enock Mupamawonde, this is actually much cheaper than constructing the proposed Gletwyn Dam. Some of the suburbs to the North and East of Harare have gone for as long as 10 years without municipal water.

Engineers in council should seriously consider building a pipeline from Kariba Dam to Harare to ease the water problems. From the conversations I had with other technical people, they said it was actually cheaper to build the pipeline than constructing Kunzvi Dam from scratch.

HCC director of water, Hosea Chisango, said:

We have to look at a lot of things like the terrain to construct the pipe and how much it would cost the city and how long it would take to execute the project.
