Mugabe Resigns
President Robert Mugabe has resigned.
Today, as Zimbabwe speaker of parliament, Jacob Mudenda was presiding over his impeachment, Justice Minister Happyton Bonyongwe interrupted him, carrying a letter.
Mudenda then asked the MPs to excuse him before announcing that the letter had come. Mugabe had resigned. Mudenda read the letter:
My decision to resign is voluntary on my part and arises from my concern for the welfare of people in Zimbabwe and my desires to see a smooth, peaceful and non-violent transfer of power.Kindly give public notice of my resignation as soon as possible as required by the constitution.
Yours faithfully, Mugabe.
The reading of the letter triggered celebrations all over the country. In Harare, cars were hooting their car horns and people shouting in the streets.
