Teachers Reject 10 Percent Pay Increase But Agree To Continue Negotiations

Teachers are reported to have rejected the government’s offer for a 10 percent pay increment demanding at least 30 percent instead. The teachers have been threatening to go on strike when the second term which started today (Tuesday) begins. However, they have agreed to continue negotiating with the government in order to reach an amicable solution.

Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe’s Takavafira Zhou told NewsDay,

The meeting is still on and we need to give dialogue a chance. If they are sincere about this dialogue process, the teachers are willing to listen and come up with a solution that ensures they are also able to live decent lives. However, if this engagement is a way to hoodwink us, it will be difficult to convince teachers not to go ahead with the strike.
