Veteran jazz musician Dorothy Masuka has died at the age of 83.
Her family confirmed to The Sowetan that Masuka was suffering from complications related to hypertension after suffering a mild stroke last year. Family spokesperson Fortune Hute said Masuku died in the comfort of her home surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Masuku was born and raised in Bulawayo in Zimbabwe. She travelled to Johannesburg by train as a teenager to launch her music career.
Said Hute:
“She has been struggling with hypertension since last year in June. As a family I can say we are still in shock but otherwise we are celebrating a legacy as well as a life. We are still deciding where to lay her to rest.”
