Cyclone Idai To Hit Mozambique Thursday Night With 200km/hr Winds

Cyclone Idai is expected to make landfall in Mozambique on Thursday evening, bringing with it high wind speeds and rain.

In Mozambique, pre-storm flooding has already killed 66 people.

In Malawi, flooding had killed 45 people as of Wednesday.

Cyclone Idai is gathering strength over the Indian Ocean and is predicted to hit the country in the city of Beira in Sofala Province.

In an interview with New24 on Thursday, South African Weather Service forecaster Jan Vermeulen said:

It [Idai] is on its way to Beira, it’s going to make landfall tonight.

It’s an intense tropical cyclone; it will have winds of 105 knots (200km/h) when it makes landfall.

We are expecting more than 100mm of rain in places; it could even reach 200mm or more in places. The main thing is wind damage and high waves that could go up to 10m.

The Tropical Cyclone, Idai is expected to hit hit Zimbabwe this Friday with the eastern parts of the country receiving the hardest impact.
