South Africans Living Abroad Vote Ahead Of May 8 General Election
South African electoral laws allow citizens based abroad to vote from their respective bases.
The country is set to hold general elections on May 8, with voters abroad having cast their ballots before that day. South Africans living in Zimbabwe voted on April 27 at the country’s embassy in Harare.
Statistics from South Africa’s Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) show that 29 334 South Africans successfully applied to vote abroad on April 27 ahead of the May 8 election.
South Africa has a huge diaspora vote, with the top 10 cities hosting South African citizens who registered to vote being London (9,084), Dubai (1,542), The Hague (1,355), Canberra (1,195), Abu Dhabi (1, 061), Wellington (927), Dublin (817), Kinshasa (797), New York (605) and Doha (566).
