The City of Gweru is reportedly left with just three months’ water supply in its reservoirs, a situation that has forced the Council to introduce water rationing.
Some parts of the Midlands capital, such as Mkoba 19 and 20 have been without the precious liquid for several months.
Gweru Mayor Councillor Josiah Makombe revealed that the situation is really bad and the city fathers will come up with a water rationing schedule to ensure that every suburb gets water equitably. Said Makombe:
To save the situation, we have decided to introduce water rationing and we are in the process of coming up with a programme to manage existing supplies and to share the water equitably.
The situation is bad but we are trying to make sure that every suburb gets water as scheduled.
Cln Makombe said that the City will embark on a borehole drilling programme, to augment water supplies.
However, the boreholes will be connected to the city’s water infrastructure and they will use electricity to pump water.
This will ensure that Gweru residents pay for the water from the boreholes.
