"Pay Heed To South African Advice", Zimbabwe Told

Daily News editorial recommends Zimbabwe to take advice from South Africa. This follows an announcement by South African ambassador to Zimbabwe, Mphakama Mbete that his country was ready to identify external and independent mediators for Zimbabwe. The mediators would be for resolving the standoff between the government and the opposition which the editorial believes is exacerbating the crises.

The editorial notes also that the crises, particularly the economic one, are continually getting worse. It attributes the crises to the failure by president Mnangagwa and Nelson Chamisa leader of the opposition to find each other. Part of the article reads

President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his allies have overseen this collapse, yet maintained a tight grip on power. When the opposition fought in the last polls amid concern he won a dodgy presidential vote, the sulking opposition leaders resolved to say tongai tione (let’s see if you will govern).

The article further notes that South Africa feels obliged to solve the Zimbabwean issue since the issue has an adverse impact on South Africa. Immigrants would enter or smuggle themselves into South Africa thereby destabilising the economy.

Daily News further projects a worse off scenario if the political elites do not find each other soon. Cripplling protests and military intervention are all a sad possibility which could worsen matters. The article, therefore, sees the South African option as the way out.
