Victims Of Cyclone Idai To Get New IDs Next Month

Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said that the victims of tropical cyclone Idai shall start getting new national identity documents next month.

Mutsvangwa said that the government had already started importing the consumables for the documents.

Addressing journalists during a post-Cabinet meeting briefing, Mutsvangwa said:

The issuance of identity documents for victims of Cyclone Idai is set to begin around mid-June, at which time the imported consumables to be used by the Registrar General’s Department for the purpose should have been received in the country.

The initiative comes after several people in Manicaland lost their documents to the cyclone that also destroyed their homes. Reports suggest that some are having a difficult time transacting at financial institutions. Absence of identity documents could also affect students when writing public examinations.
