Mugabe Raided Pension Funds For His Lavish Birthday Parties- Report

A Mutare pensioner claimed that every year around January/February, he will get his pension $20.00 less as the money was being used to fund the lavish birthday parties thrown for former President Robert Mugabe.

Around February 21, Mugabe would gather thousands of people at a selected venue where an extravagant party would be held in his honour.

The last such party Mugabe enjoyed was in February 2017, as later in the year, he was overthrown in a military putsch as has been keeping a low profile ever since.

Adeline Gaya, a Mutare resident said that her father was a victim of the involuntary deductions.

Speaking during to the Insurance and Pensions Commission (Ipec) in a meeting organised by the Consumer Council of Zimbabwe, Gaya said:

Every time in January or mid-February I would receive my father’s pension $20 short, which upon enquiry we would be informed that it was a contribution for the 21st February Movement celebrations yet my father was never consulted.

We would want our money back because he did not consent to such a contribution.

Ipec principal analyst Salatiel Manyika said that the organisation would look into the allegations as such deductions were unprocedural.
