The Independent reports that some ZANU PF insiders have argued that the anti-corruption crusade that was initiated by president Emmerson Mnangagwa was a mere strategy f doing away with his political enemies within the ruling party.
They reportedly claim that Mnangagwa is targeting individuals opposed to his tactics and stay in power. Obert Mpofu and Speaker of Parliament, advocate Jacob Mudenda, are said to be topping Mnangagwa’s target list.
An unnamed senior ZANU PF official reportedly said:
Since after the general elections last year, Mnangagwa has been purging those he no longer trusts and wants in the security forces. He started with the CIO (Central Intelligence Organisation), then police and later the military.
Now he has extended the purges to the party. Mpofu, who is the new centre of power at the party headquarters, and Mudenda, as head of the legislature, hence another centre of power as well, especially if Mnangagwa’s impeachment comes, are now targeted.
Those officials and former ministers now stationed at the (party) HQ (headquarters) are led by Mpofu and have become a force of resistance to Mnangagwa’s rule. That is why they are opposed to his right-hand minister, Mthuli Ncube’s austerity measures.
Another official reportedly said that the fight against corruption crusade which the youth league is pushing was the president’s weapon to implicate and later remove his enemies.
The president has since pledged to institute a commission of enquiry to investigate individuals who featured on the list of corrupt people.
