Bulawayo Mayor Says He Was Not On Leave When Town Clerk Was Suspended

Bulawayo mayor, councillor Solomon Mguni, said that he was not on leave when his deputy, Tinashe Kambarami and other councillors attempted to remove the Town Clerk, Christopher Dube from office.

Reports had indicated that Mguni was on study leave in South Africa when the councillors clashed with the Town Clerk.

However, in an interview with Southern Eye on Monday, Mguni said that he was only officially absent from work for two days. He said:

First, there was no vacancy in the office of the mayor. I was not on council leave as there was no certificate issued according to the Urban Councils’ Act.

I was only absent for two days. The whole thing was not done procedurally. The town clerk is at work today.

We cannot just dismiss the deputy mayor’s allegations against the town clerk, the same way we cannot decide without the town clerk responding to those allegations.

Every citizen has a constitutional right to a fair hearing. The town clerk is at work today.

Councillors Kambarami and Silas Chigora were on Friday arrested in connection with the attempted suspension of Dube, and subsequently appeared in court on Saturday.
