Court Defers Judgment In MDC MPs Violence Case

Kwekwe magistrate, Story Rushambwa, has deferred judgment in the case in which two MDC legislators are accused of public violence and inciting mayhem during the January protests.

The protests were triggered by increased prices of fuel.

MDC legislators, Settlement Chikwinya (Mbizo) and Lloyd Mukapiko (Redcliff) are currently out on bail.

The magistrate was on Thursday expected to pass judgment but deferred the matter to a later date. Giving his ruling, Rushambwa said:

I still need more time to study the submissions by both the State and defence and so the matter is deferred to August 9, 2019.

The ZCTU called demonstration did not end well as security personnel allegedly shot and killed a number of civilians whilst scores were left nursing wounds. It was also alleged that some civilians were sexually violated by soldiers who visited their homes nicodemously and uninvited.

The State, however, denied deploying the army which descended upon protesters some of whom were vandalising properties and looting shops.
