The City Of Harare had reportedly received another batch of water treatment chemicals. The 24 tonnes of calcium hypochlorite which were stuck at the border have now been delivered to Morton Jaffray waterworks the Herald reports. This was revealed by Acting Secretary for Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Colonel (Retired) Joseph Mhakayakora who said:
Harare City Council first received two-and-a-half tonnes from a local supplier in Bulawayo a day after it switched off its water treatment plant. It has received an additional 24 tonnes of water treatment chemicals that will last for two weeks
According to the City Of Harare spokesperson, chlorine gas trucks are still stuck at the border but other chemicals are now relatively stable and they have started treating the water ready to be pumped out:
We are expecting an equal amount next week while we await delivery of the chlorine gas. The trucks are still held up at the border. We are relatively stable with other chemicals as well.
The government has said it is looking for a permanent solution to the water crisis in Harare. On Monday Harare City council shut down their water plant due to lack of water treatment chemicals. Chemicals usually came from a company called Zimphos which is now failing to supply the chemicals due to prevailing economic conditions among other things.
