"Our Friends Have Given Up On Us, We Are On Our Own", Shingi Munyeza
A member of the Presidential Advisory Council (PAC) said that Zimbabwe’s regional and international allies have given up on the country.
Shingi Munyeza, who is part of the 26-member PAC, is an outspoken business and Christian leader. He was speaking at this year’s National People’s Convention called by the Citizens’ Manifesto in Harare on Wednesday. He said:
There has to be regional and international support, the region and the world have given up on us…the region including those we call our friends have thrown in the towel.
FeedbackThe international community has thrown in the towel. So basically this train that is cruising in the wrong direction and you assume that somebody is going to rescue us; do not bother rushing to somebody else. We are on our own.
Meanwhile, Nkululeko Sibanda, the MDC presidential spokesperson opined that there is a realisation that Zimbabwe is getting to a point of no return. He said:
There is no doubt that there is a lot of despair, people think we are not going in any particularly positive direction.
There is a perverse realisation that this country is getting to a point of no return and an understanding that the attempts to reengage the international community are failing and have failed.
Despite his “Zimbabwe is Open for Business” mantra, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has failed to garner significant material support from Western governments that imposed sanctions against the country almost two decades ago. The country’s socio-economic environment has continued to deteriorate since the November 2017 coup.
