Former Clerk Of Court Jailed Over Bogus Marriages

A former clerk at the Harare Magistrates’ court Mboko Edmore Rugare was on Wednesday sentenced to 12 months in prison for contravening the Marriage Act after presiding over weddings, masquerading as a marriage officer.
Rugare was however jailed to an effective nine months after three months were suspended on condition of good behaviour.
It was the State’s case that Rugare impersonated magistrate Olivia Mariga and duly performed the marriage ceremony of Karen Kokore and her husband Egomole Calistus Okechukwu before issuing them a marriage certificate.
The offence came to light on December 15, 2014, when Kokore initiated a divorce process and her marriage certificate could not be located.
