Youths Stone Hearse Carrying Late Vendor's Body

A group of youths on Thursday last week attacked with stones a hearse carrying the body of Hilton Tafadzwa Tamangani, a street hawker who died in remand prison amid reports that he was tortured by police.

The body was being transported from a funeral parlour to Tamangani’s home in Unit D, Chitungwiza when the incident took place. Family spokesperson, Modikani Tamangani, said:

A group of youths attacked the car and one of them hit the vehicle with an object that looked like a golf club. The vehicle was damaged and windows were broken in the process.

The case was reported to police at Town Centre who advised us to first take the body to our house before filing a report.

Tamangani was arrested alongside 10 other street hawkers near the MDC headquarters in Harare. The arrests followed the discovery of old police helmets in a nearby building.
