The government of Zimbabwe has in a Government Gazette Extraordinary dated 15th November 2019 gazetted the Maintenance of Peace and Order Act – Act 9/2019.
Section 24 of the Act repeals the Public Order and Security Act which has been deemed draconian as it infringed on several human rights and freedoms including the right of Association.
For instance, POSA was recently employed by the state to block a number of opposition MDC demonstrations.
Meanwhile, some legal experts and members of the MDC particularly Senator Douglas Mwonzora have been criticising the MOPO saying that it was a replica of the POSA it sought to replace.
