Accidents Claim 91 Lives During The Festive Period

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has said that 91 people were killed while 414 others were injured in 1 141 road accidents which have so far been recorded during this festive period.

In a statement on Tuesday, National Police Spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi also revealed that the major causes of these accidents were speeding, reversing errors and inattention. He said:

A total of 1 141 road traffic accidents were recorded during the period extending from December 15 to 29, 2019. Of these, 63 were fatal and claimed 91 lives while 414 were injured.

The major causes of the accidents were speeding, reversing errors, following too close and inattention.

Compared to the same period in 2018, the number of road accidents in 2019 has declined while the total number of deaths has remained the same.

Last year, 1605 road traffic accidents occurred of which 67 of these were fatal compared to 1 141 recorded this year.

In the same period last year, 621 people were injured while 414 were injured this year.
