Police Officers Banned From Using Social Media While On Duty

Police officers must not social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc while on duty, and rather focus on crime prevention and investigation.

This was said by Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) National Police Spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi. He said:

… police officers on any deployment point, shall focus on allocated tasks and serve the public according to set standards.

Police officers will thus not be allowed to focus on their cellphones at the expense of duty or abuse WhatsApp platforms, Twitter, Facebook or any other social media sites.

Ass Comm. Nyathi’s remarks follow the arrest of a Harare-based policewoman for allegedly leaking classified information meant for her superiors to the public, through WhatsApp.

The police officer, Lorine Joyce Mugoronji now faces criminal charges as well as disciplinary action under the Police Act.
