Government To Deduct 2.5% From Workers Salaries Every Month

The government of Zimbabwe has announced that starting next month (March), a monthly contribution of 2.5% of the total remuneration shall be deducted from every Government employee in consultation with the Public Service Commission.

The fee, according to the government, will go to a state savings fund. The minister said consultations were still being held with the public service commission, which employs all government workers.

The development comes at a time when workers are lamenting over their ‘paltry’ salaries which they say is insignificant particularly because the economy in the country is inflationary.

Only recently, the government agreed with the Apex Council, the highest board that represents all government workers, that salaries of workers needed to be increased.

The deal that was regarded as a compromise saved the situation as it stopped or rather postponed mass demonstrations that were being mulled by workers’ unions.
