Legislator Implores Executive To Declare Women’s Day A Public Holiday

A Member of Parliament has urged the government to declare March 8, the International Women’s Day a public holiday.

Proportional Representation legislator Paurina Mpariwa Gwanyanya (MDC Alliance) made the call while speaking in the National Assembly. She said:

When we look at the public holidays that we recognise in Zimbabwe, looking at our local calendar, I am one of the women who have raised this issue several times. I believe that International Women’s Day should be recognised as a public holiday.

House Speaker Jacob Mudenda assured Mpariwa that an official request will be made to the Minister of Women’s Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development for the issue to be taken up to Cabinet for discussion.

Zimbabwe currently has 11 public holidays on its calendar, some local and others international. These are; New Year’s Day, Robert Gabriel Mugabe National Youth Day, Easter Holidays, Independence Day, International Workers’ Day, Africa Day, Heroes’ Day, Defence Forces Day, National Unity Day, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day.
