'I Foresee Lockdowns Being Given In Small Doses Until August'

Mpilo Central Hospital acting chief executive officer Dr Solwayo Ngwenya has lauded the government’s decision to extend the lockdown by a further 14 days to control the spread of COVID-19.

Dr Ngwenya asserted that if the lockdown had not been extended, more people could have been infected by the respiratory disease caused by the new coronavirus. He said:

If you see the figures that are being published, the virus is being contained from spreading out of control.

The virus does very well in cold temperatures, which are coming in a few weeks or have already started.

So, the lockdown has to be extended so that the virus does not get out of control during the cold season.

I foresee lockdowns being given in small doses until August. I don’t foresee schools, churches and mass gatherings starting until after August.

The national lockdown was initially set to elapse on 19 April but was extended by two weeks to May 3.

In announcing the lockdown extension on Sunday, President Emmerson Mnangagwa said the country has not yet met the conditions stipulated by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to allow for the lifting of the measures.
