Bulawayo City Council is reportedly mulling permanently banning vendors from the city’s CBD post-COVID-19 lockdown, Newsday reports.
The move aimed at bringing sanity to the city was confirmed by the city’s Mayor Solomon Mguni who said they have been discussing the move as a council:
It is something that has been under discussion by the COVID-19 council taskforce which brings together councillors and management. We (taskforce) have adopted those recommendations, pending endorsement by the council. Vendors will be supplied with fresh farm produce in their residential areas once the measures are adopted, this is also a way of decentralising the services to the people.
Vendors through their Bulawayo Vendors and Traders Association (BVTA) executive director Mr Michael Ndiweni said they were in full support of the council’s decision:
We hope that this also means providing amenities such as water and toilets for the informal traders to be able to work in proper places and facilities
