Beitbridge Court Orders ZRP To Refund A Resident Who Was Coerced To Pay Lockdown Violation Fine

A Beitbridge court ordered ZRP to reimburse a man who had been fined for defying lockdown restrictions after the court established that the man was fined under duress, The Standard reports.

Beitbridge resident Magistrate Toyindepi Zhou reversed an admission of guilt that had been entered on behalf of Tafadzwa Mukutiri on 16 May under receipt number Z69 (j) 0296651 A. The reversal was after Mukutiri’s lawyer argued Mukutiri paid the fine under duress.

Speaking to the publication, Mukutiri’s lawyer, Jabulani Mzinyathi said:

We have just collected the refund through a bank transfer. We are now waiting for our day in court because we have filed a report against the police who beat our client.

Police brutality has been on the rise during the lockdown with 4 different incidences in Bulawayo resulting in a lawsuit since the beginning of the lockdown.
