Hundreds Escape From Malawi COVID-19 Quarantine Center

Hundreds of people have reportedly escaped from coronavirus quarantine centre in Malawi after complaining that it was substandard.

The escapees had returned from South Africa, one of the most hit African countries, and were yet to be tested for the virus, local media reported.

The centre is a stadium which was turned into a quarantine centre and those housed at the institution complained about lack of water, toilets and food.

The escape was confirmed by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Health who said the authorities had launched a manhunt.

A day before the escape, it had been reported that eight people who tested positive for the virus on arrival from South Africa had escaped from Kameza isolation centre in Blantyre.

These reports are not peculiar to Malawi as Zimbabwe has also reported that more than a hundred returnees had escaped from quarantine centres.

Also of major concern is that there are some border jumpers who just returned from abroad who are not willing to go through the vetting system due to some misconceptions about the testing and quarantine process.

This is concerning considering that most of Zimbabwe’s coronavirus cases are returnees who came back recently.
