Chamisa's Allies Plot To Derail MDC-T Extraordinary Congress

MDC officials, who were were members of the party’s national council under the late Morgan Tsvangirai, have petitioned acting MDC-T leader and acting secretary-general Douglas Mwonzora to call for a national council meeting ahead of the Supreme Court-ordered extraordinary congress to be held to elect a substantive president.

The latest move by the officials who are mostly members of the Nelson Chamisa-led MDC Alliance is thought to be aimed at sabotaging the MDC-T’s extraordinary congress.

Sesel Zvidzai, who was part of the national council as Tsvangirai’s chief-of-staff, told NewsDay that a total of 93 members of the national council signed the petition demanding that members of the Tsvangirai-led MDC standing committee present themselves before them. The petition reads:

We, the undersigned individuals who were members of the MDC-T national council as at February 14, 2018, having noted the Supreme Court judgment in the matter Mashavire vs MDC-T and others and subsequent events, acting in terms of article of the MDC-T constitution as it was on the same date, hereby petition for the convening of a lawful meeting of the national council as constituted on that date.

Mwonzora confirmed that he had received the petition and said it was discussed in the MDC-T standing committee, adding that the party leadership will hold the meeting as soon as conditions permit.

He said since the party has already held a virtual meeting of the council recently and also because of the COVID-19 regulations, holding a national council meeting was not a priority.
