"Subscriptions To MDC Alliance Spiked Following Reports That Khupe Had Received $7.5M," - Coltart

The Treasurer General of the opposition MDC Alliance, David Coltart has insinuated that subscriptions and membership applications to the party went up after it had been reported that the government gave $7 492 500 million to MDC-T led by Thokozani Khupe under the Political Parties Finance Act (PPF Act).

MDC Alliance has since after the reinstatement of Khupe as MDC-T leader, been recruiting new members. Posting on Twitter on Monday, Coltart said:

Thank you to all our @mdczimbabwe supporters – yesterday after it was reported in the @thestandardzim that Khupe had received the Z$7,5 million owed to the MDC Alliance there was a surge of membership applications & donations to mdcallianceparty.org ! Together we are stronger!

The money is, as stated in the PPF Act, a preserve of political parties whose candidates would have received at least five per centum of the total number of votes cast in the most recent general election.

MDC Alliance says Chamisa, not Khupe who contested in the 2018 elections under MDC-T and lost, does deserve the money since he got minimum required votes.

Khupe says her reinstatement, β€œas the legitimate leader of the MDC Alliance legislators,” meant that she is the one supposed to receive the money.
