Charles Thomas who is part of the group that has filed an application to bar President Emmerson Mnangagwa from exhuming the bodies of Gukurahundi victims revealed to Newsday how he survived the genocide that killed 20 000 people from Matabeleland and Midlands Province.
Thomas told the publication that he was left unconscious by the perpetrators that attacked and tortured him and he only survived because a good Samaritan took him to hospital:
Thomas said he was a survivor of Gukurahundi who was left unconscious probably presumed dead. After he was taken to hospital by a Good Samaritan, Thomas said he was further tortured before being taken to Bhalagwe in Kezi where several villagers were killed and buried in mass graves, including his brother.
The Gukurahundi still haunts the government 30+ years later as some claim the government should apologise and some think the government should compensate relatives of the victims. The president while in Bulawayo last week promised to issue death certificates for the victims and promised to conduct the exhumations and oversee the reburials.
