Local Govt Minister Reinstates Convicted ZANU PF Cllr

Zimbabwe’s minister of Local government, July Moyo has reinstated the ZANU OF councillor for Chinhoyi Ward 11 Voster Mashevedzanwa, who was early this year convicted of assaulting a police officer on duty and resisting arrest.

The 41-year-old Mashevedzanwa was sentenced to four years in jail by Chinhoyi magistrate Tapiwa Banda for the charges.

He spent only a month in jail, made an appeal at the High Court and was granted bail. Minister Moyo then wrote to the Chinhoyi Municipality instructing the immediate lifting of the suspension.

Speaking to NewZimbabwe.com Mashevedzanwa said he was happy to have resumed work after almost a year in the political wilderness. He said:

Yes, the ministerial communication came and was recently read in council chambers notifying fellow councillors that l have returned to continue with my duties.

Minister Moyo’s actions are supported by the Urban Councils Act (Chapter 29:15) which was established for purposes such as the provision for the establishment of municipalities and towns and the administration of municipalities and towns by local boards, municipal and town councils.

Mashevedzanwa is reinstated when scores of MDC Alliance councillors and legislators have been recalled by the MDC-T interim leadership.
