Uganda: Bobi Wine Seeks Reversal Of Museveni's Victory
Ugandan opposition leader, Bobi Wine on Monday filed a challenge in the Supreme Court seeking the reversal of President Yoweri Museveni’s victory in last month’s election.
Speaking at the Kampala courthouse where he filed the petition for the runner-up in the January 14 presidential election, Medard Sseggona, one of Wine’s lawyers, said they wanted the court to nullify Museveni’s victory. He added:
We do not want (Museveni) participating in any future election.
The election outcome extends President Yoweri Museveni’s rule to at least 40 years. Museveni, a 76-year-old former rebel leader, has ruled since 1986 and this is his sixth term in office.
Wine, real name Robert Kyagulanyi, is allowed by the Ugandan constitution challenge the election outcome within 15 days from the declaration of results by the electoral commission.
The Supreme Court must now rule on the petition within 45 days.

The run-up to the vote was marred by the worst pre-election bloodshed in years, and a sustained crackdown by government critics and Museveni’s rivals.
Wine himself was arrested on a number of occasions during campaigns. Wine resorted to campaigning on social media platforms and the government also shut down the internet days before the election.
Museveni has won every election since 1996, almost all marred by allegations of irregularities and losing candidates have sought unsuccessfully to overturn his wins in court.
