COVID-19 Delays Kariba Power Station Upgrade By A Further 2 Years

The COVID-19 pandemic has reportedly set back the Kariba Power station upgrade by a further 2 years, BNN Bloomberg reports.

The development reportedly came to light after Zambia’s finance minister met Zimbabwe’s Finance Minister. Delays in unforeseen technical challenges, supply constraints, and delays in contracting works have also been cited apart from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the publication:

The ministers approved a budget of $71.3 million for 2021 that will be financed through a combination of internally generated funds, amortized loans, and grants sourced from the World Bank, African Development Bank, the European Union, and the Swedish International Development Agency.

Meanwhile, the Batoka Gorge Project is expected to break ground later this year.
