Cloudy, Drizzly & Windy Conditions Expected On Winter Solstice

Here is the Weather report and forecast produced by the Meteorological Services Department in conjunction with the Department of Civil Protection

ZIMBABWE EVENING WEATHER REPORT AND FORECAST ISSUED AT 1600 HRS ON SUNDAY 20 JUNE 2021 VALID UNTIL TUESDAY 22 JUNE 2021

PREAMBLE

Sustained south-easterly winds which are relatively cooler and moist have been entering the Zimbabwean atmosphere from the southeast coast of Southern Africa.

These resulted in cloudy, windy and cold conditions in Matabeleland South, Bulawayo Metropolitan, southern parts of Midlands, Masvingo, and Manicaland Provinces, with widespread rain and drizzle.

The highest falls were recorded at Mukandi (4.6 mm), Buffalo Range (4.3 mm), Chivhu (2.2 mm) and Buhera (2.2 mm).

FORECAST FOR TOMORROW MONDAY 21 JUNE 2021 WINTER SOLSTICE

Cloudy, cold, drizzly and windy conditions are expected to dominate areas such as Matabeleland South, Bulawayo Metropolitan, southern parts of Midlands, Masvingo, Manicaland and Mashonaland East Provinces.

Brief cloudy periods coupled with a chance of light showers are anticipated in areas such as Harare Metropolitan, Midlands, Matabeleland North and Mashonaland West and Central Provinces.

It should be cold both in the morning and evening, though mild by the afternoon.

IMPACTS

  • Cold conditions in the early hours of the morning have negative impacts on poultry and some crops.
  • Low temperatures may affect the health of all persons, however, persons of an ill disposition, the elderly and young children tend to be more vulnerable.
  • The Winter Solstice, 21 June is the period when the sun is furthest north. This marks the shortest daytime and the longest night.
  • Solar-dependent systems may be affected by fewer daylight hours

ACTIONS TO TAKE

  • Keep warm by wearing appropriate winter attire, where possible stay indoors.
  • Ensure that vulnerable members of society are kept warm, especially overnight.
  • Avoid brazier or open fire to keep warm, in an unventilated room to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • COVID is still a potential threat, stay safe, mask up, get vaccinated.
  • If one is dependent on solar, ensure the load is minimised when charging is not optimal.

WEATHER FORECAST FOR TUESDAY 22 JUNE 2021

Masvingo, Mashonaland East and Manicaland provinces are expected to have brief cloudy periods with light drizzle in places; it should be cold at first becoming mild later.

All other areas, namely Matabeleland North, Matabeleland South, Midlands, Mashonaland West, Mashonaland Central, Harare and Bulawayo Metropolitan Provinces are anticipated to be mostly sunny and mild by day becoming cold towards evening.

Slight ground frost is probable in frost-prone areas.
