Truck Driver Goes Missing After Suspected Carjacking

A haulage truck driver went missing on Friday while transporting a consignment of copper from Chirundu to Harare.

Masimba Murombo (48) working for Biltrans Transport, was destined for Harare and could have been forced to divert his route to Chegutu by suspected hijackers.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the incident via a post on their Twitter page. Read the statement:

The ZRP is investigating a case of suspected carjacking which occurred in Chegutu on [15 April 2022], where a Freightliner Truck with horse number ADC 2434 and trailer number HX45MBGP laden with 31.5 tonnes of copper from Zambia went missing.

The horse was later found parked at the 104 km peg along Harare-Bulawayo Road facing the Harare direction without the trailer.

Police observed a shattered windscreen, tampered ignition and some scattered clothes in the truck.

Reports suggest that the father of four was not travelling in a convoy as required when transporting copper.

NewsDay reported a source as saying the case is being investigated by Chegutu Criminal Investigation Department.

Family spokesperson Weston Murombo told the publication that the truck was recovered on Saturday while the load was recovered the next day. He said:

The company confirmed recovering the truck first and then recovered the load at a farm in Chegutu, but the driver is still missing.

The police are looking for the missing driver and the matter is under investigation.
