A time line :Emmerson Mnangagwa and factionalism in Zanu Pf 2014-2016

Factionalism in Zanu Pf traces its roots back to the liberation struggle and the recent wave of factional fights rocking the revolutionary party have mainly been visible between 2014 and 2016.


December 2014 -Demise of Joice Muru and the elevation of Emmerson Mnangagwa

After a decade in the Presidium and have made history by being the first female vice president Joyce Mujur wa fired from the presidium and expelled from the the Zanu Pf party on allegation of trying to unseat her boss Robert Mugabe through unconstitutional means.

Robert Mugabe sacked Mrs Mujuru, after accusing her of corruption and plotting to kill him.Mugabe also dismissed seven government ministers in connection with the alleged plot,against his life and presidency.

2015, Mnangagwa on the Ropes

After his elevation in 2014 Mnangagwa started dodging bullets from his opponents within the party ,who were against his elevation.People who seemed to be in his camp whilst working on Mrs Mujuru's removal turned against Mnangagwa leveling the same allegations leveled againsst Joyce Mujuru.Mnangwanga like mujuru was hammered for having interests to topple Robert Mugabe from power.


Factionalism and the 2016 Succession Race

In early 2016, the race to succeed Robert Mugabe got intense and Mnangagwa was increasingly accused in the press for having too much ambition to succeed Robert Mugabe as president of Zimbabwe. Leading the assault on the supposed intention by Mnangagwa to succeed Mugabe was Jonathan Moyo and Saviour Kasukuwere who were later joined by the First Lady, Grace Mugabe in February. Sarah Mahoka, the Zanu PF Mashonaland West Women’s League chairperson, was also very vocal against Mnangagwa's supposed ambitions. Moyo, Kasukuwere and Grace Mugabe were believed to be part of a faction called G40 which was said to be working to block Mnangagwa in favour of Grace Mugabe for succession.

Publicly accused of factionalism

In July 2016, at a rally organised by a group of war veterans to show support to President Robert Mugabe and attended by the president, the first lady and both vice presidents. Mandi Chimene gave a speech during which she accused the Mnangagwa of leading a faction:

Mnangagwa Dissociates From Lacoste Faction

In late July 2016 After accusations of him being the leader of the Lacoste faction of the ZANU PF.

Jonathan crucifies Mnangagwa in Polituburo presantation

The 72-minute video presentation reportedly made by Professor Jonathan Moyo to the Zanu-PF Politburo on the 19th of June, 2017. In the presentation, Moyo, alleged that Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his loyalists are aiming to succeed President Mugabe through a number of schemes

4 November, Mnangagwa attacked in Bulawayo

Grace Mugabe attacked Emmerson Mnangagwa and called for his dismissal from office at a youth interface rally held in the city of Kings

6 November Mnangagwa fired from his VP post

Through a press briefing conducted by Simon Khaya Moyo the Minister of information Mnangagwa was dismissed from his VP post.
