Agrippa Mukahlera

Agrippa Mukahlera was a Zimbabwean politician. Mukahlera was president of the Democratic Party before it merged with the UPP to form a new National People's Union.

Background

He was born in 1934 at Zimuto in Masvingo then known as Fort Victoria. His father was a Dutch Reformed teacher.

Education

Mukahlera was educated at Dadaya, Kutama and Goromonzi High School. He obtained a Bsc from Roma University. He also studied economics and political science in Norway.

Career

He taught at Zimuto and Cyrene Mission.

Political Career

In 1960 he became a full-time politician of the National Democratic Party (NDP). After NDP was banned he became deputy general secretary of ZAPU and later appointed the party's representative in Dar-es-Salaam. the party was banned while he was in Tanzania. He was then given a scholarship to study economics and political science in Norway. Mukahlera returned to Rhodesia in 1965 shortly before UDI.

He then formed the Democratic Party and was the party's president until he resigned in June 1969. The Democratic Party and the United People's Party formed a new National People's Union (NPU) which was led by Gordon Chavunduka.
