Events

After a reported five attacks by dogs suspected of being rabid since January 2018, residents of Chiredzi have asked the Department of Veterinary Services to kill stray dogs that have become a menace.

Chiredzi Residents and Ratepayers Association chairman Jonathan Muusha last week decried the surge in the number of stray dogs that posed a threat. We appeal to residents to make sure their premises are secure if they want to keep dogs,” he said. [1]

In July 2019, a challenge was put, to take advantage of the Lowveld’s predominantly sunny weather to set up solar plants for power generation in the wake of the prevailing electricity load shedding. Chiredzi Residents and Ratepayers Association chair Jonathan Muusha said the heat received in Chiredzi and areas around the district created favourable conditions for investment into solar energy and ease the prevailing power woes. Establishing solar plants for power would stem rampant deforestation taking place at an alarming rate. “It’s very sad that our country has failed to adopt the smart energy concept which encompass the use of solar energy and wind power to generate electricity which is in short supply.”

Chiredzi District EMA officer Peter Mugodi said there was need for farmers to be educated about the effects of climate change. [2]

In December 2019, it was reported that women in Chiredzi were being terrorised by unknown men who using charms called mubobobo to have se_x with them in their sleep. The Zimbabwe National Traditional Healers Association (ZINATHA) secretary for Chiredzi District, Jonathan Muusha who is also chairperson of the Chiredzi Residents and Ratepayers Association confirmed the reports.

“The women realise that they are having se_x with a man but they are not able to see the rapist’s face. They may even see his image as he comes into the house and intercourse can take place even when the woman is sleeping with her husband,” said Muusha. “We are being ra_ped by men using mubobobo in this suburb. As women we have come to realise that the practice is rampant as many women are complaining whenever we gather in our circles. At times the whole street will be complaining against the practise but we cannot put our finger on the culprit.

“This is withcraft but the country’s laws say there is no witchcraft. Mubobobo is bad magic that is used by men who are cowards and are afraid to propose love to women. ZINATHA banned traditional healers from issuing people with this kind of magic. [3]

In the 2020 Chiredzi budget, council proposed to purchase vehicles for management. However, Chiredzi United Residents and Ratepayers Association (Chirra) has voiced strong objections saying town engineer, Wesley Kauma, does not deserve a vehicle because he has failed to deal with the water crisis. Chirra chairperson Jonathan Muusha said “Incompetence should not be rewarded.” “The town is dry most of the times and we wonder what the engineer is doing. We will not reward someone who just comes to work to warm the chair and do nothing.” [4]

In March 2020, Chiredzi Town Council engineer appeared before a disciplinary committee that was set up to look into allegations of incompetence levelled against him.

Chiredzi Residents and Rate Payers Association (CHRRA) secretary Jonathan Muusha noted misuse of council vehicle, failure to bring solution to the water crisis as well as justification as to how he suddenly acquired many houses in town. CHRRA is “currently impressed by the work being done by the engineering department now under Kauma’s deputy, Irvine Muteyaunga”. The department had managed to install a transformer at the water works, replaced the water pipeline from the treatment plant, a storm drain was maintained, street lights at the bus terminuses and CBD were erected, all public toilets were face lifted. All these happened in a short period while Kauma was on suspension. [5]
