Lawrence David Mavima better known as Larry Mavima is a Commissioner, in the Public Service Commission (PSC) and a former Minister of State for Midlands Province[1], Chairman at Jacaranda Mining Pvt Ltd [2] Zanu- PF central committee member and former Midlands provincial vice-chairman.

Mavima resigned as the National Railways of Zimbabwe’s chairman following his swearing-in as Senator for Shurugwi-Zvishavane and appointment as Minister of State for Midlands province.[3]

Education

Mavima holds an MBA in Finance from California Baptist University. He is also a holder of a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration with a Minor in Public Administration.

Background

Mavima is an Experienced Owner SmartBags Private Limited. He has a demonstrated history of working in the packaging and containers industry. Larry has a Long and successful experience in the Tourism Industry being a senior partner in the largest photographic companies in the country. He is the Chairman and majority shareholder in 45,000-hectare hunting game reserve in Save Valley Conservancy under Matendere Ranch. He is also the Founder and owner of the second largest Potato Crisps Company in the Country-Hanawa Super Foods Pvt Ltd. Mavhima has a strong entrepreneurship professional skilled in Negotiation, Business Planning, Banking, Entrepreneurship, and Accounting.[2] Mavima worked with Mnangagwa on a number of projects, including the construction of the Zanu PF party’s Midlands Conference Centre.

According to the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC), Mavima has vast experience in the International and private sector where he started as a Customer Service Manager for Allstate Insurance Company in Los Angeles from 1978 to 1981. He was appointed as a Group Management Accountant for Wiroplastics Division in 1981 and was later promoted to the post of General Manager in the same Company. He held various positions at SEDCO and at Baxter International in California, USA.

NRZ Board

Mavima became board chair in March 2016, replacing Engineer Alvord Mabhena who was relieved of his duties in November 2015.

Political Career

In September 2018, Mavima was appointed as a Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Midlands Province by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

In 2022, Mavima was elected uncontested to the position of ZANU PF provincial chairman, Midlands Province. The other provincial executive committee members who were elected by the ZANU PF Midlands Provincial Coordinating Committee (PCC) were Edward Chakanyuka Chiherenge (deputy chairman), Edmund Mkaratigwa (provincial secretary for administration), Barbara Rwodzi (provincial secretary for finance), Paul Mavima (secretary for legal affairs), Edmore Samambwa (secretary for health and child care), and Prosper Machando (secretary for gender and culture).[4]

In November 2023, Mavima was appointed as a Commissioner, in the Public Service Commission, by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Events

It is alleged that Mavima and his team played a pivotal role in engineering Emmerson Mnangagwa’s ascendancy to the presidency, in the process setting themselves on a collision course with former President Robert Mugabe’s heavy State machinery.[5]
