In July 2018, Lovemore Maiko was elected to Ward 7 Chitungwiza Municipality, for MDC Alliance, with 1062 votes. He beat Tatenda Kazuru of MDC-Alliance with 805 votes, Charamba Mlambo of Zanu PF with 769 votes, Chakanetsa Musonza, independent with 136 votes, Alfred Tachiweyi Makaya of PRC with 41 votes, Oliver Shongorisho, independent with 33 votes, Livemore Mavula of ZIPP with 33 votes, Wilfred Murasiranwa of CODE with 19 votes, Webster Mudzamiri of BZA with 17 votes, David Chihwayi, indepndent with 16 votes, Job Mhende, independent with 14 votes, and Netsai Mubvumbi of UANC with 13 votes. Events

Alleged Stoning, 2022, 2023

On 20 April 2023, Job Sikala and Lovemore Maiko again went before Harare Magistrate Mrs Yeukai Dzuda. They faced charges of disorderly conduct after they allegedly stoned some Zanu PF supporters who were holding a rally at Zengeza 5 open ground on 2 May 2022. The lawyers for both Sikhala and Maiko indicated they did not have State papers and needed time to prepare for trial, so they were placed on remand and were given 9 May 2023 as the trial date. [2]

Election 2023

In the 23 August 2023 Elections, Maiko was re-elected Councillor for Ward 7 on a CCC ticket.

Suspension 2022

On 12 October 2022, Minister of Local Government and Public Works July Moyo suspended six Chitungwiza Councillors, Lovemore Maiko, Musa Makweza, Kudakwashe John, Chengetai Nyagondo, Richard Chamutsa, and Peter Clever Matiringe. They are said to have convened an illegal meeting. According to the suspension letters there were reasonable grounds for suspecting that the councillors committed acts of gross misconduct, gross incompetence and willful violation of the law. [3]

Re-elected Mayor, Sept 2023

On 18 September 2023, Lovemore Maiko (Cllr, Ward 7) was re-elected a Mayor of Chitungwiza. Jerita Mutingwende (Cllr Ward 12), was elected as Deputy. Both CCC. He received 31 votes. Leah Chidamba of Zanu PF, received 2 votes. The election was overseen by Tafadwa Muguti, Secretary for Provincial Affairs and Devolution.

Maiko was elected Mayor in 2018, but in March 2022 was recalled by the MDC-T, one of dozens of councillors and legislators who were recalled. In Chitungwiza, there are a total of 33 Councillors, 25 were elected as Ward councillors, 8 were elected through proportional representation. [4] [5]
